A lot of people come into the Nexus in a lot of very interesting ways.
Tim Drake gets there by bus.
He wasn't planning on going to the Nexus. He meant to be heading back to his house, but his parents won't be home for another week, and he's far too curious for his own good.
He takes a little while to look around, listening to the questions and the answers, overhearing warnings, that sort of thing. Finally, he asks his question.
"Has anyone else ever gotten carried away by their own cleverness?"
Ed just looks at the kid for a moment before taking off his right glove to reveal his automail hand. "This answer your question?"
"Wow," Tim says. "Did you make it?"
Ed bites back the urge to make a sarcastic remark about the difficulty of doing such a thing with only one hand.
"No, a friend did." He pauses. "Well, two different versions of her. The one I grew up with and an alt I met here that did some repairs a few months back."
He could have designed it. Or something.
"Oh, that's cool too. What happened?"
"Did something I shouldn't have as a kid and almost ended up dead," is Ed's flat response. "I'm lucky it only cost me my arm and most of a leg."
Oh, Lady Athena have I ever. *laughs ruefully* I've gotten bitten on the butt by my own cleverness far too many times.
Well, it got me married once. I've had to fight my way out of deathtraps a few times because I underestimated the enemy. And then there was that time when I wound up ruling a planet by accident... took me a century to get out of that one.
What can I say? M'Lady leads me into some very strange situations... and I get myself into even more.
(is slightly taken aback to see...
himself in the Nexus, albeit a younger version, but takes it in stride like usual)
...Lots. Sometimes I surprise myself with what I can come up with just to stay one step ahead.
A Robin, but he doesn't look like Dick or Jason. Tim's sure there haven't been more, than those two. And why does this Robin look so familiar?
"Well, I'm sure you'd have to be smart to have your job."
"Yeah; I'm pretty smart, but it was drilled into me like everything else is. He's
not a teacher who holds back on anything, not even once."
"It must be something," Tim says.
"Oh, yeah-it is. There are some good times, and there are some bad times. At times it seems like what's bad outweighs the good, and vice versa."
Tim nods. "Hey, what year is it for you?" If this Robin's from the future, it would explain why Tim has no idea who he is.
Knowing the year won't change the past, so...
"2007, but the year's about to change again; give me a couple weeks and I'll be wishing everyone here a happy new 2008."
"Wow," Tim says. He supposes Batman could have found another kid to be Robin. If Tim exists in that Robin's world, his mission to find Nightwing must have failed. At least Batman has a Robin, though.
Whoever this Robin is, he looks about as old as Tim would be in 2007.
"I guess asking what the future's like isn't encouraged, right?"
"Batman would frown upon the notion altogether. Let's just say...there will be lots of ups and downs, but things never get to the breaking point."At least not yet anyway...!
Yes. My husband has, before he was mine.
He chuckles gently.
Yes, my husband. I have a husband and a wife. I know it's not ordinary, but it works for the three of us.
